Taking on a School-Based Traineeship while completing school is no small feat, and we were proud to seeÌý Trainee Annie, embrace every opportunity that came her way with enthusiasm, determination, and a genuine willingness to learn.

Completing her Certificate III in Business (BSB30120) with Eric Brown MotorsÌý, Annie was able to gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be part of a workplace and gain the professional experience she was looking for.

My Careers Advisor told me about School-Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships at the end of Year 10. At that time, I had a passion for commerce as it was a class I was taking at school, and I wanted to explore those skill sets at a higher level.

Starting a School Based Traineeship also meant entering a new environment, facing new expectations, and setting up new routines. It was an opportunity for Annie to step out of her comfort zone, take on new responsibilities and begin developing confidence in a new setting.

The biggest surprise I had when entering my workplace was the atmosphere. I am used to a retail or hospitality environment, or even an education environment, normally, but the space of my workplace was extremely different in the best way. I learnt to communicate with different types of people as well as adapt to the regular day of staff members. It gave me the skill of having an open mind when approaching something new.

One key aspects of Annie’s journey was learning how to balance her school commitments alongside her workplace responsibilities and vocational training. With the committed support of her employer, Annie was able to maintain a manageable routine that supported her success across all areas of her learning.

I was extremely fortunate to have a flexible workplace that fostered my school studies. I'm grateful that I was able to work one day a week without feeling extensive impacts on my senior years of high school. My work routine was agreed on by my employer and me, and was altered as needed depending on school commitments

Throughout her traineeship, Annie developed foundational, industry based skills that contributed her role in the workplace and her studies. In particular, Annie developed confidence using digital systems that are essential in today's modern workplaces.

The coolest skill I have learnt during my time here would have to be using Microsoft platforms. Whether it was learning the ins and outs of Word or how to properly use Excel, I now understand that there is a lot more to the job than what I first thought. This skill was a part of the coursework set by ACCM but was also required for my role in the workplace, and I am proud of myself for learning how to properly use these platforms.

Over time, Annie’s experience helped build her confidence and prepare her for future study and work environments. She now feels more capable and ready to take on new challenges.

…I've always had a strong working ethic, but learning how to deal with problems along each step of a working day has increased the confidence I willÌýapproachÌýwork with.

Reflecting on her experience, Annie strongly encourages others to consider a School-Based Traineeship as a way to gain workplace experience and skills, all while still at school.

Do it. I cannot recommend applying for a School Based Traineeship any more than I do to those around me now. The balance it has allowed between my school studies, work and sportingÌýcommitmentsÌýhas made Year 11 and 12 so much easier than what it could have been. I have had a lot of fun in the workplace and strongly encourage everyoneÌýdo tryÌýto do the same!

During her time with ACCM, Annie remains a consistent and dedicated learner. Annie’s advisor at the College commented on Annie’s incredible work ethic, diligence and can do attitude!

We are incredibly proud of everything Annie has achieved throughout her traineeship. Congratulations, Annie, on reaching this milestone. We wish you every success as you take the next step in your career journey.
